Big trade deals aren't just happening in North America - they are also heating up in South America! From countries including Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, companies are trying to get their hands on the hottest football merchandise name in the world - Football’s Square Mile.
Rumours started swirling last month at the South American Football Confederation meeting about an audacious bid for the Football’s Square Mile merchandise franchise for the South American region. Grupo AWH, an Argentina-based top clothing consultant, is leading the bid from the home of the current World Cup Holders.
Graeme Brown, the Director of Footballs Square Mile, said, "In 2024, we trademarked the Football's Square Mile logo so we could start creating marketing opportunities all over the world. It just made sense to start with the South American market, where we can celebrate the Scottish roots of the most successful football continent in history. Grupo AWH is named after Alexander Watson Hutton, who was born in Scotland and is known as the Father of Argentinian Football."
Not to be outdone, El Deporte from Brazil, part of the Donohoe Group, invited the Football's Square Mile Team to Bangu, Rio De Janeiro, to see how they celebrate their Scottish footballing roots, which go back to the village of Busby in East Renfrewshire. Their ambitious counter-offer eyes the Brazilian home market as a natural place to start, as the most prestigious name in international football.
David Coutts, the Company Secretary of Footballs Square Mile, said, "I was seen at the Singl-End cafe in the Merchant City with a representative from Brazil. It seems like everyone in Glasgow is now talking about what we are up to!" The discussions are still ongoing, and we're hopeful of also launching a sister 'Hampden Collecio’ brand, in South America in the future.'
The competition for this exciting sportswear deal is making traditional global sportswear companies look like they're standing still. It's an exciting time for football merchandise in South America! There are further rumours circling that El Casa Harley, the Uruguayan sportswear powerhouse, could be eyeing up its options for a last-minute bid.
Richard S Young, Director of Football’s Square Mile, explains, “People should not be surprised about the extent of interest from South America in tracing their footballing origins. As in Scotland, cricket clubs turned to football to keep fit in the off-season. The second oldest team international of any sport is the Uruguay v Argentina cricket match back in 1868. This served as the template for international competition on the continent, and as football exploded, they followed this example to create footballing internationals between these great countries. This can be traced all the way back to Football's Square Mile.'
El Joni Harley, the great-great-grandson of the Uruguayan footballing godfather, has been quoted as saying, 'This would be a tremendous honour to sneak in at the back post and secure these rights. Our Scotch Professor ancestors are widely known, and there is a growing market for this merchandise.'
The Scotch Professors are on their comeback tour, and Football's Square Mile's mission for UNESCO Worldwide Heritage Status will be supported by a global franchise network that will carry the eponymous name from the cradle of the modern game to the world of sports merchandise!
